As a result of the bus accident in the outskirts of Bangkok on Tuesday, 18 people died out of 49 on board, most of whom were members of the local municipal council. The police of Thailand reported that the bus, which had two floors, overturned off the road while descending a slope in the province of Prachinburi, on the outskirts of the city.
The junior police lieutenant stated: "We found 17 bodies at the scene of the incident, and one more person died in the hospital." The driver explained that the brakes failed while descending the bus on a steep road.
In Thailand, approximately 20,000 people die every year in road transportation accidents, which equates to more than 50 fatalities per day, according to data from the World Health Organization for 2023.
In October, on the outskirts of Bangkok, one of the largest cases of road transportation accident in the country in decades occurred: a bus with Thai students on a trip flipped over, resulting in the deaths of 23 people.
