Thailand Freezes Miss Universe Co-Owner's Assets

Thailand's securities regulator has frozen the assets of Miss Universe co-owner Jakkaphong 'Anne' Jakrajutatip. An arrest warrant has been issued for her on charges of fraud and a $16 million corruption scheme. The company JKN, which owns 50% of the pageant, has already declared bankruptcy.

Thailand Freezes Miss Universe Co-Owner's Assets

Two months ago, it was announced that 50% of the shares of the beauty pageant were sold to the Mexican Raúl Rocha Cantú, who is currently a fugitive from justice in his country, accused of alleged ties to organized crime. This month, Miss Universe announced a transition process, the details of which are unknown, while the courts of Mexico and Thailand are pursuing the company's owners. The Securities and Exchange Commission of Thailand (SEC) announced the freezing of the bank accounts and all assets of Miss Universe co-owner Jakkaphong 'Anne' Jakrajutatip, against whom an arrest warrant has been issued for failing to appear at a trial where she is accused of fraud. The South Kwaeng Bangkok court, handling the case, had scheduled to hand down a sentence in this case for this Friday. The court issued an arrest warrant against Anne on November 25 after she failed to appear at the hearing. The court has not yet released new information about the sentence. However, the SEC published a statement declaring Anne, creator of the JKN Global Group conglomerate, a person 'unfit and unreliable' for business, and accusing her of alleged embezzlement and diversion of funds through front companies and signing ghost contracts to deceive investors. According to the body, which ordered JKN to exit the Thai stock market as of tomorrow, the corruption scheme amounts to about 16 million dollars and includes the registration of false financial information by the tycoon, whose assets will be frozen, initially, for 180 days. The SEC sanction prevents Anne from holding positions in public companies and prohibits her from leaving Thailand. However, the high-profile businesswoman remains at large and has not commented on her arrest warrant or the accusations against her. 'Anne', as she is known in the business world, is the majority shareholder of JKN, which acquired Miss Universe in October 2022 for 20 million dollars from IMG Worldwide LLC, based in New York. JKN, owner of 50% of Miss Universe, has confirmed it has liquidity problems and declared bankruptcy in November 2023.
