Nearly half a million people in Cambodia and Thailand have fled to temples, schools, and safe shelters as fighting continued on Wednesday amid a century-long border dispute.
At least 480,000 people have left their homes due to the escalation of tensions on the border between the two countries. Many have found temporary refuge in temples, schools, and other public buildings.
The conflict between Cambodia and Thailand over the territory around the Preah Vihear temple dates back to the early 20th century. Both countries claim the ancient temple as their own, which has led to numerous armed clashes over the decades.
"We are very scared," said one of the evacuees. "We left all our belongings and ran to save our lives."
International calls for a ceasefire have so far been unsuccessful. It is expected that the conflicting parties will hold new talks to resolve the situation.
